The Global Mechanism (GM) of the UNCCD (United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification) is currently
implementing an Euro 8 million project funded by the European Commission, known as FLEUVE. The initiative is
designed to strengthen the capacities of local-level actors from the Sahara-Sahel region (Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali,
Niger and Senegal) in the shape of 5 micro-investment projects to help local communities access increased investments
for sustainable land management (SLM). FLEUVE contributes to the overarchng Great Green Wall Initiative for the
Sahara and Sahel (GGWSSI), an African-led partnership that aims to addresses land degradation and desertification in
the Sahel and Sahara, serving as a metaphorical ‘wall’ against poverty.
Within the context of FLEUVE, the GM has a core component on ‘Communications and Knowledge Management’. As
part of this flagship project, the GM requires the support of a communications professional to help lead a strategic,
coherent and sustained communication and knowledge management drive in the context of the FLEUVE project to
successfully deliver a number of key outputs to help elevate the profile of the Great Green Wall.
Reviews internal and external communication flows and help to develop an overarching strategy in support of
2017 Action Plan to boost public awareness and influence investment in the project;
Maintains and update content production for GGW website and forge linkages to ensure integration and
harmonization with the UNCCD corporate website ;
Manage FLEUVE/Great Green Wall brand including brand platform toolkit and visual identity;
Develops and implement a social media and digital strategy, initiating pro-active media outreach efforts, to
generate interest from broad audiences, including the general public, policy makers and private sector investors;
Produces a broad spectrum of multi-media products, including infographics, innovative presentations and
digital products to help bring visibility to the project;
Maintains and cultivates working partnerships with existing brand partners, whilst fostering and brokering new
ones to boost awareness and investment for the project;
Produces or oversees production of a specific type or types (e.g. print, broadcast, etc.) of information
communications products (e.g. press kits, press releases, feature articles, speeches, booklets, brochures,
backgrounders, audio-visual materials, radio spot program, etc.), to include proposing topics, undertaking
research, determining appropriate medium and target audience, preparing production plans, writing drafts,
obtaining clearances and finalizing texts, editing copy, and coordinating design approval, printing procedures
Initiates and sustains professional relationships with key constituencies (ie international media network) in
particular on topics relating to desertification, climate change, migration and food security.
Acts as UNCCD focal point on communications issues with relevant GGW partners, monitoring and reporting
on developments, responding to inquiries.
Supports external relations driven activities of the Global Mechanism, including the preparation of donor
proposals for further investments in the GGW.
Perform any other job related activity required to achieve the goals and objectives of the unit, sub-unit,
programme or the secretariat.
An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent degree) in communications, social sciences,
international development or communications related subject;
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism,
international relations, public administration or a related field is required. Experience in web publishing and
content management is desirable. Experience working in a multi-cultural environment in an international
organization is required.

marketing and promotion, audience outreach, message targeting. Ability to rapidly analyze and integrate diverse

environment. Ability to diplomatically handle sensitive situations with target audiences and cultivate productive
relationships. Knowledge of relevant internal policies and business activities/issues. Ability to produce a variety of
written communications products in a clear, concise style. Ability to deliver oral presentations to various audiences.
